How Times have Changed – or Have They?

harveywhitedesign's avatarPutting the Love In

I have this totally brilliant book in my library (I use the term as a collective noun for my books, rather than an actual room of books) called ‘The English Home.’ It was written by Banister Flight Fletcher and Herbert Phillips Fletcher (fabulous names) architects, barristers and brothers, in 1910. And it contains floor plans, sections and in depth discussions about the way the English House has been built since the 11th century and Saxon times. We think of our approach to updating our homes as being thoroughly modern and ‘of our times’, but these men were advocating the same planning and checklists for work done one hundred years ago. So how is it that we’ve lost the common sense approach when considering the health of the building as having equal importance to the aesthetics?

Is it that the DIY revolution has introduced a level of enthusiastic but uninformed renovators…

Friday the 13th FULL MOON

By Tara Sutphen

The Strawberry Full Moon (Native American) falls on Friday the 13th at 22* Sagittarius, it will culminate June 12, 2014 9:13pm PDT/ June 13, 2014 12:13am EDT (Farmers Almanac).

There won’t be another Full Moon on Friday the 13th until 2049. Here are a few fun facts of Friday the 13th to get you in the mood that it’s a good day:

o   The US Seal has 13 stars, bars, feathers in the eagle’s tail, 13 bars in one claw, 13 olive branches in the other.

o   The Chinese, Pagans and others in ancient times marked time by the lunar cycle and calendar, thus 13 was considered a very lucky number.

o   Egyptian philosophy believes life is a mission for the eternal afterlife. This journey walks through 13 levels, the first 12 in this life, at death the 13th level. The number 13 symbolizes death as glorious and attaining “real life”. But you must go through the 12 stages first.

o   Fear of Friday the 13th is called Triskaidekaphobia.

o   The fear of Friday the 13th started as a Norse Myth where 12 gods were having a party in Valhalla (Heaven) and capricious Loki came as the 13th guest and arranged for Hoder the Blind to shoot Baider the Beautiful with a mistletoe tipped arrow where he died and the earth grew dark.

What a beautiful omen as we are at summer solstice and the sunshine is at its peak. We are to honor the light of the sun and our inner luminosity. The moon in Sagittarius asks us to take an unprejudiced look at our happiness. This moon is about racing back into the verve of life. We are to sing, dance, love with the utmost reconnection of the self. Reactivate the pulse on ‘who we really are ‘ underneath conditional programming. This is not about going hog-wild and releasing the inner-crazy, this is about coming back to the “beautiful you”.

No longer should we feel disoriented or locked in a box. There is a side to everyone’s psyche that is triggered by their personal unhappiness. We are to re-find the lost parts of our wise choices, sense of fun, and no more boredom.   Let go of stress, bad habits and negative thought patterns, and this IS clear-cut, don’t hang on to pain. It’s a time to stop any callous behavior too. You are to break free. Manage your life with gentleness. As you gain insight, your intuition leads you to stabilize your emotions and act in your best interest.

Actions speak louder than words. Stepping forward isn’t about doing what other people want you to do…it’s about you doing what you want to do. Society has some unnecessary rules, yet the universe is boundless, and the one rule is simple: “Live life in compassionate harmony”. If you don’t act in your self-interest now you will waste precious time.

Journal Questions:

Maybe if we reverse our sight we could see ourselves a little better: Visualize your self from space – close your eyes – and in your minds eye – look down and identify who you are on the earth – really click in and see……. scope in and see yourself down there in your human suit.

What’s your view?

o   How do you feel

o   How do you look

o   How do you make money

o   What your living quarters are like

o   Who do you love

o   Who loves you,

o   What kind of food you like

o   Who are your real friends

o   What are your family members like

o   What places do you like

o   How about your career goals,

o   Where do you see yourself going

What is your future

While looking down on your human suit, write a few sentences on each of these subjects – How do you…

  • Blame yourself
  • Blame others
  • Feel discouraged
  • How can you heal
  • Depressed
  • Where is your self-worth
  • Are you having negative feelings
  • How can you heal

Remember the power of your mind. Recollect the potency of your energetic actions. As the moon comes closer to the earth during our summer solstice – raise your standards, walk forward into a beautiful life….

“Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.”~Aristotle (Ancient Greek Philosopher 384 BC-322 BC)

A Home for Good

harveywhitedesign's avatarPutting the Love In

What impact does the environment we work in have on the work we create? I ask this question almost weekly because I’m fascinated by the way in which human beings can be aware of but not really see their surroundings. And after visiting the National Trust property Bateman’s, the former home of Rudyard Kipling over the weekend, it’s clear to me that the home he purchased in 1902 is as much a part of the work he created as the paper he wrote on during the process. The beauty of his words and the beauty of his environment feel like they’re holding hands and stepping forward together.

The house is built on a small scale, although in the Seventeenth Century, when it was built for John Brittan an iron master, it probably felt rather grand. The decorative details are solid and well crafted; oak paneling, limestone…

Full Flower Moon

By Tara Sutphen

The Full FlowerMoon (Native American) at 23* Scorpio will culminate May 14, 2014 12:18pm PDT/ 3:18pm EDT (Farmers Almanac).

This moon Flower moon is luminous yet not of frivolity. We are to reach a deal with our self this month, we are to look inside on how we speak to people and if we’re happy in our ways of communicating. It’s about honesty at a deeper level within you. You are born to live the life you long to live. Are you doing that or are you just messing around? You know the answer, you deeply know…

Are you feeling solid or stagnant, confused, shaky or content…think of this and how can you start to take steps in living genuinely. We think the world is made up of time, but by the time we make up our minds…it can be too late. The time for love can slip away, the time for money can by-pass us, the time to exercise and be well doesn’t happen…Are you concentrating on the right things? Are you sleeping while you are awake? Wake up Wake up…look deep within and regenerate your ideas, communication skills and actions. It’s your time on the planet and the earth is full of bounty and blessings and they are yours by birthright. Sorce the moon, pray and connect your feelings with your conscious acts.

Journal Questions:

Paragraph for each question.

What are you doing with your time

How are you communicating with your coworkers and your family

Are other’s taking from you

Do you pull enough of your share of responsibility

Are you overly responsible

Do you discuss what you need and why

Are you speaking your truth or are you fudging any sort of realness for compromising others feelings

The time to create the life you would like to live is now…daydream, night dream…make wishes. There is always hope. An idea should be your idea and then move forward, gently and caring. When you lend help and support it comes back 100 – 1000 fold. If you’ve been frustrated, sit still, breathe deep…and allow all the beauty and support to come into your life. You deserve love, security and happiness…allowing yourself to deserve. Breathe in Peace, Exhale Chaos…

—–“When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, “I used everything you gave me.” ~Erma Bombeck 1927-1996

A Little Bit Nuts

harveywhitedesign's avatarPutting the Love In

There are some houses in this world that you visit and wonder ‘WHY?’ Claydon House in Buckinghamshire is one such. Rebuilt by Ralph, 2nd Earl Verney between 1757 and 1771 to rival the nearby Stowe house in magnificence, it is almost as if he got so carried away by his obsessions that he didn’t know where to stop. And indeed this singleminded ‘mania’ led to his financial downfall and after his death in 1791, the demolition of more than two-thirds of the house by a disapproving niece – as a lesson on the perils of excess. I can’t imagine many families putting up with such extreme behaviour – of either generation – for very long!

I’d wanted to visit Claydon for such a long time because I’d seen pictures of the exuberant Rococo and Chinoiserie styling but I didn’t realise that Lord Verney had not been…

Happy Beautiful Beltaine

Image

Beltaine
 by Tara Sutphen

Beltaine is the “Celebration of the Light”,the light time of the year. The dark time being remembered by Samhain. May 1 is the day in the middle of the spring and the summer equinox’ (15*Taurus). May Day is the time for love and the happiness of summer on it’s way.

Beltane is a celebration of the union of souls, The union of minds, and the union of bodies. The earth mother calls her progeny to replenish the earth. Flowers decorate hair and everywhere. Maypole ribbon dances, with two circles interweaving around a decorated tree or pole, clockwise dance circles. Bonfires or candles to spark the sacred fire of union and fertility.

Druids and Pagans raised the Beltaine fires on hilltops on May Eve, the fires were lit in order to bring the sun’s light down to earth. Earth awakening from it’s long winter nap and the flowers are in bloom and frolicking abounds. Joy alights your body, mind, and spirit, the colors become brighter, you see the best in everyone, casting away all worries and doubts you collected over the winter time. All nightmares become daydreams of love, hope and harmony.

Beltaine or Beltane is an anglicization of the Irish “Bealtaine” or the Scottish “Bealtuinn.” — “bel,”brilliant”, “tene” “fire”

Things to do on Beltaine alone or with a group

Create a Beltaine circle or group
Buy or Pick flowers
potluck
maywine (alcoholic or non alcoholic)
Candles, Fireplace, Bonfire — Lighting a fire with a blessing
May pole (you can use a tree if you don’t have a pole) garnish w. greenery and flowers – tie long ribbon

If you create a May pole, make lots of wishes while you walk clockwise into your future, and at the end of wrapping the ribbon say a blessing for yourself and end with “to love and be loved, So it is”. If the tree/pole ribbons pretty and sturdy enough you could leave until Samhain.

Some of the questions that you can ask your friends or family are:
What were the highlights in your winter? Everyone must come up with at least one if not several highlights. What are the dreams to enliven your spring and summer? Every one should convey their intentions for the summer.

Full Pink Blood Moon

Full Pink Moon

By Tara Sutphen

The Full Pink Moon (Native American) at 25* Libra will culminate April 15, 2014 12:46am PDT/ 3:46am EDT (Farmers Almanac) and a Total Eclipse with a Grand Cross.

There are a many aspects for this Full Pink Moon in Libra. The gentleness of Libra eloquently allows a certain grace with potency, as no other planet could with a Total Eclipse. When we have an eclipse we will need to change or let go of something holding us back. It brings something exciting or illuminating to each of us. The “Blood” moon will be seen in a Tetrad phase of light, the same phenomenon observed every sunrise and sunset.  We have a Grand Cross, all are at 13’s with two oppositional Space stances.

Just a bit of amazing Moon and Planet energy showering down upon us earthlings.  We’re ready for it right? We’re in harmonious acceptance. We have an opportunity to clear responsibilities and old karma. We are ready…

First of all, purge all that no longer serves you. Do not dwell on the negative, sit with your eyes closed and take a couple deep breaths, remove all pressure, heaviness and worries away from your body and then away from your aura – feel the lightness of your being. Now…. Take a couple deep breaths. Start to feel all your chakras turn in a clockwise direction. It’s time to do some internal spring-cleaning. Aren’t you feeling better when you’re activating your life force.

As you clear away the old to make way for the new, this is certainly not a time to wish away your life.  It’s time to reach a certain balance, which means we don’t go too inward or outward with our personalities and fears. Instead we are to fill ourselves with trust of who we are, to the core of our being with the brightest light and connection of God.

You are to be seen in the world. This is not to say you want to be a singer, actor or any outward profession. It’s all about keeping our self in balance. Many people try to make themselves invisible or blend in. They think it’s comfortable not to participate in the world. They say one thing and mean another, or end up doing things they never wanted to do. Or they physically hide.  They stop participating, even with their own health or knowledge. Whether it’s not having an opinion, asking another person a question to start a conversation, getting a job you want, or seeking real love.

This is not to say we don’t compromise in relationships, families, friendships and our jobs.  Dust yourself off.  Shine in the rays of the moons glow. The moon is saying to turn on the lights in your heart, in your mind and in your soul. Not only as the moon beams, you are to glow. Beam as you really are… You are to be seen in the world.

Meditation By Tara Sutphen

“Zing”  — a Magic entering the Mind … Ideas form into thoughts and daydreams.

Muses spark the creative process and stimulate one’s endeavors into fitting ventures. Overcome your obstructions, whether lacking confidence or intangible concepts. Sometimes we can get lost in indefinable and elusive development. In Greek Mythology the Muses gave inspiration to everyone and granted wishes. They have encouraged artists since antiquity, acknowledged for their importance in resourceful innovation and formation.

In this meditation each Muse will grant you her gift, guiding you toward greater resourcefulness and motivation. The Muses inspire inception to the completion of an urge, starting projects from outset to finish. Search for variety of the inner you and your talents, bring your childhood desires into reality. Have you been struggling and need extra support? Let the Muses encourage you in the direction of a greater fate. 30 Minutes.

Happy Spring Equinox

Spring Equinox, Ostara, Eostre, Easter, Vernal Equinox

By Tara Sutphen

  • 21st March   Spring Equinox marks the mid-point of the Waxing Year, the nights and days are balanced once again; the time when Kore, (Persephone) was believed to have returned from the Underworld where she had ruled throughout the Winter. The spark of light, born at Winter Solstice has reached maturity, and from here onwards, the days progressively grow longer than the nights. Western culture proclaims this the first day of Spring.Older traditions called the Spring Equinox, Ostara; the time of the festivals of the Grecian Goddess, Eostre, and the Germanic Ostara, both fertility Goddesses of Dawn. These influenced the naming of the modern-day Easter Holiday. New greenery bursts forth from sleeping seeds in the countryside, as metaphorically, pagans also plant their own seeds for future goals, future projects and growth at this time.

Decorated eggs, being symbols of fertility are symbolic of Ostara. In days gone, Europeans gave gifts of decorated eggs to new brides, in the hope that they would bear many children. Similarly, bowls filled with eggs were given to farm workers by the farmer’s wife, to ensure a rich harvest. Most all cultures see the egg as a symbol of Life; the actual home of the Soul. In Russia, decorated eggs are still given as gifts to loved ones and buried in graves to ensure rebirth.

The women gathered the eggs only from hens which were around a rooster and decorated them, allowing no one to watch them work as they transferred the goodness of the household to the designs on the eggs, thus keeping evil away. Dyes were mixed to secret family recipes and special blessings placed on each egg.

    Colors of Ostara Eggs:

  • White:
  • Purity
  • Yellow:
  • Wisdom, a successful Harvest, or Spirituality
  • Green:
  • Spring, rebirth, wealth, youth, growth, happiness
  • Blue:
  • Good health, clear skies
  • Orange:
  • Power endurance, ambition, courage
  • Red:
  • Happiness, hope, passion, nobility, bravery, enthusiasm, love
  • Brown:
  • Enrichment, good harvest, happiness
  • Purple:
  • Faith, trust, power
  • Pink:
  • Success, friendship, love
  • Black:
  • Remembrance

Lore:

  • The custom of eating Hot Cross Buns also has pagan origins. The Saxons ate buns that were marked with a cross in honor of Eostre; Ancient Greeks consumed these types of buns in their celebrations of Artemis, Goddess of the hunt, and the Egyptians ate a similar cake in their worship of the Goddess Isis.
  • There are conflicting ideas as to what the cross symbol represents. One suggestion is that it is a Christianisation of horn symbols that were stamped on cakes to represent an ox, which used to be sacrificed at the time of the Spring Equinox. Another theory relates to Moon worship; the bun representing the full Moon, and the cross, its four quarters. Christianity gave new meanings to the symbolism of the buns, saying the cross represented the Crucifixion Cross. Thus, superstitions arose crediting these buns as being charms against evil, so after Good Friday, people would save one or two of them to hang in their homes as amulets. During the festival season and indeed, for a long time afterwards, fishermen would carry these Easter buns in their boats, for protection.
  • The Spring Equinox defines the season where Spring reaches it’s peak, with the powers of light increasing. The God of Light, (Llew), now gains victory over his twin, the God of Darkness. Llew was reborn at the Winter Solstice and is now old and strong enough to vanquish his rival twin and mate with his Mother Goddess. The great Mother Goddess, who returned to her Virgin aspect at Imbolc, welcomes the young Sun God’s attentions and conceives a child. The child will be born nine months from now, at the next Winter Solstice, when the cycle closes, only to begin anew.
  • The Easter Bunny is another symbol which has obvious links to fertility, rebirth, and the abundance of life which is evident in Spring.
  • Eostre was a playful Goddess whose reign over the earth began in Spring when the Sun King journeyed across the sky in his chariot, bringing the end of Winter. Eostre came down to Earth then, appearing as a beautiful maiden with a basket of bright colorful eggs. Eostre’s magical companion was a rabbit who accompanied her as she brought new life to dying plants and flowers by hiding the eggs in the fields.
