Winter Solstice & Yule

Dec 21: The Winter Solstice is a celebration of the heart, vessel of our dreams. Through the darkest time on the planet we are to find solace once again, returning to our inner resting place. Gallantly gazing upon our life’s daily uncertainty and unknowing future. May the earth fold us in comfort away from any harshness. As the light dims we are to harmonize and begin to sincerely replenish our hearts and minds. The pagans called this holiday Yule, where the people of Europe and Scandinavia made festive. It is not considered religious. The pagans were naturalists, such as the Native Americans and other indigenous communities around the world. They followed the course of the sun, the moon and cycles of the seasons for planting food and generally planning survival strategy. As winter comes we recognize our need to rest our minds, hearts and bodies while warming at the hearth. And as we come back out of the darkest day-night of the year and begin to gain more minutes of sunlight and replenishment each day. We linger for a glimmer of light to awaken, reconnecting our spark to life, to the sun and the conviviality of our own beating heart.
Recipes for Winter Solstice & Yule
Hot Apple Cider
Juice Apples or Buy Apple Cider
6 cups Apple Cider
½ tsp whole cloves
¼ tsp ground nutmeg
3 cinnamon sticks
Heat ingredients, simmer, strain & serve hot
Hearty Stew
1 ½ pounds Beef stew meat
water
¼ c. flour
Add tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, onion
1 tsp thyme
2 tbsp mustard
Salt/pepper
Cook until meat is cooked and vegetables are tender
This can be a vegetarian dish if you prefer
Squash Casserole
6 c. diced yellow squash or zucchini
Onion
Garlic
Salt/pepper
Butter or oil
Add into casserole dish
Bake 325* bake until squash is tender 20-45 mins
Alternative added ingredients into squash casserole
Crushed crackers
Cheese
Sour cream
Yule Log Cake
10×15 inch jelly roll pan – line with parchment paper & butter the paper.
Pre-heat oven 400*
4 eggs room temperature
2/3 c. sugar — 7 minutes beat eggs while adding sugar 1 tbsp at a time
Add sifted flour ½ c, to batter – stir don’t beat
Add other ½ c. of flour – stir
Pour into pan – BAKE 10 min. Do not overcook
While hot- put cake into clean dish towel sprinkled with powdered sugar so it doesn’t stick.
Remove parchment paper, still warm – roll the cake with the dishtowel in. Let cake cake cool.
Unroll cake – spread desired filling, jam, or frosting onto cake and re-roll cake.
Frost outside & decorate, Refrigerate to set overnight

Full Cold Moon

The Full Cold Moon (Native American) at 25* Gemini will culminate December 17, 2013 1:28am PST/4:28am EST (Farmers Almanac).
This Full Cold Moon is illuminating on how well we communicate with each other. We have an awful lot of gadgets with the internet and smart phones to frustrate or entertain us these days. Social media may be sidetracking us away from face to face communication and connection. We need to remember how to mingle and associate our minds with others. There are many lonely people in a majority of billions among us. Reach out with our hearts to those we love. And try and understand those we pass casually throughout our day. It takes building blocks and many steps to create meaningful relationships. Thoughtfulness is a virtue. It only takes a sentence to spark hope in someone who feels lost. Sometimes you may not feel friendly but if you give yourself a little push and make the effort, the rewards can be phenomenal.
We can make a lot of judgments, and we assess people rapidly on whether they could be a potential friend or colleague. We can generally tell in a matter of moments whether we enjoy or feel irritated by certain individuals. It usually takes some time to know which individuals we might not be compatible. And when we are not attuned, does that mean we don’t try and be respectful and open-minded. Another’s strengths may be our perfect business partner or wise counsel. We all know how to talk, but do we know how to listen. Do you say what you mean and mean what you say. Are you truthful with others, and speak without being hurtful or boastful. You can say plain truth and gain easy honesty. It’s not about being right, wrong, smarter or better, we want to come together in harmonious acceptance. Camaraderie is a learned behavior, when we are pleasant with every one, life is easier and less stressful. Not all and sundry are congruent, many people you will have to move away from to remain peaceful and compassionate. Gently turn away and rekindle what is good and healthy. A random kind word goes a long way with 95% of people. And those we already connect well, this is the moon to soak up the meeting of minds.

Two years ago the Beaver moon fell on 11.11.11 — it was an occasion of stepping into the benefits of the world. A gateway of stimulus, and fortunate epoch of beneficence, insight and magnetism, it’s as though the heavens know when we need an extra dose of optimism and therefore decides it’s time to illuminate the dark states we often find ourselves in. In 2012 the Beaver Moon reminded us to communicate with each other, it was an Annular Eclipse, needing to change or let go of something holding us back. As Thanksgiving gives thanks for America and her gifts, Mabon is a time of giving thanks for the World. Exchanging a few words of thankfulness for the food presented us and offer prayers for all people. Our Mabon consists of a dinner table with family and friends. We will say what our best and happiest Summer memories were and what we wish to happen this Fall. Chef Cheyenne will lead a blessing, lighting of the candles and a toasting ritual. We will toast our appreciation for the farmers, markets, cooks and nurturers. We will express our gratitude.

Autumn Equinox, 2nd Harvest, September 21st
Mabon, (pronounced MAY-bun, MAY-bone, MAH-boon, or MAH-bawn) is the Autumn Equinox. The Autumn Equinox divides the day and night equally, and we all take a moment to pay our respects to the impending dark. We also give thanks to the waning sunlight, as we store our harvest of this year’s crops. The Druids call this celebration, Mea’n Fo’mhair, and honor the The Green Man, the God of the Forest, by offering libations to trees. Offerings of ciders, wines, herbs and fertilizer are appropriate at this time. Wiccans celebrate the aging Goddess as she passes from Mother to Crone, and her consort the God as he prepares for death and re-birth.
Various other names for this Lesser Wiccan Sabbat are The Second Harvest Festival, Wine Harvest, Feast of Avalon, Equinozio di Autunno (Strega), Alben Elfed (Caledonii), or Cornucopia. The Teutonic name, Winter Finding, spans a period of time from the Sabbat to Oct. 15th, Winter’s Night, which is the Norse New Year.
At this festival it is appropriate to wear all of your finery and dine and celebrate in a lavish setting. It is the drawing to and of family as we prepare for the winding down of the year at Samhain. It is a time to finish old business as we ready for a period of rest, relaxation, and reflection.
Symbolism of Mabon:
– Second Harvest, the Mysteries, Equality and Balance.
Symbols of Mabon:
– Wine, gourds, pine cones, acorns, grains, corn, apples, pomegranates, vines such as ivy, dried seeds, and horns of plenty.

The Full Singing Moon (Celtic) at 26* Pisces will culminate Sept 19, 2013 4:14am PDT/ 1:14am EDT.
This Full Singing Moon is about looking deeply into your own inner looking glass. Who did you want to be when you grew up, and are you making out okay or do you need to back up and revise a little. What mistakes need to be cast adrift. What do you need to change about you. How do you go back to living genuine days that turn into authentic years. How do you reopen your mind’s eye and creativity. Your talents and skills, are you using them. This Full Moon is looking into your secret aspects and casting light on what needs to come back and enliven your life. This moon is not about love or other people, it’s about your understanding of your instincts, survival mechanisms and what makes you who you are…Coming as close as we can to the soul’s destiny and what goals you have chosen in this life.
It’s never too late to take up a musical instrument, learn to dance, or taking classes on any subject. Until we are off the planet, learning and study keeps us youthful and motivated to participate in the every day world. The way to work our spirit is to have an idea of what we want and why we want it, voicing our desires and moving towards the goal. But every little vision starts in the darkness, whether it ever see’s the light of day is for us to encourage ourselves into confidence. Of course many of our ideas that lay around in the shadows aren’t realistic, but when did practicality ever have anything to do with a dream coming true.

The fee us $495 per person. There is a non-refundable (but transferable) deposit of $75 to ensure your place in the seminar. Seminar hours at 10-5 PM both days.
